Enhancing the Oil-Fouling Resistance of Polymeric Membrane Ion-Selective Electrodes by Surface Modification of a Zwitterionic Polymer-Based Oleophobic Self-Cleaning Coating

Due to the frequent oil spill accidents and pollution of industrial oily wastewater, fouling has become a great challenge polymeric membrane ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) for applications in oil-contaminated areas. Herein, simple approach is proposed enhance oil-fouling resistance ISEs by surface modification zwitterionic polymer-based underwater oleophobic coating. As proof-of-concept, classical poly(vinyl chloride) membrane-based calcium electrode (Ca2+-ISE) chosen as model sensor. The coating can be readily modified on sensor’s immersion into mixture solution dopamine acrylate monomer (i.e., sulfobetaine methacrylate, SBMA). formed poly(SBMA) (PSBMA) alters oleophilic an one, which endows with excellent self-cleaning properties without loss analytical performance. Compared pristine Ca2+-ISE, PSBMA-modified Ca2+-ISE exhibits improved stability when exposed oil-containing wastewater. explored other electrochemical sensors use oil-polluted environment.
